THE ENGINEER

Deep Dive is the home of Mitch Rackin, who has 25 years of experience in diverse fields of audio engineering.

Mitch arrived in NYC from Atlanta, GA at 18 to attend college and immediately immersed himself in the nightlife of ‘90s New York seeing shows several nights a week of everything from downtown avant-garde jazz to the CBGB punk scene and everything in between. Soon after arrival he began interning at the original Knitting Factory on Houston Street where he learned to do live sound and then became a house engineer at legendary downtown clubs The Cooler and Wetlands.

At the same time, Mitch was interning and then working at iconic NY studios Greene Street Recording and Sound On Sound where he started building up his recording chops. He also worked at New Sensor Corporation (Electroharmonix and Sovtek) where he developed a love for vintage gear and tubes and then went on to recording interviews and creating soundbites for The Wall Street Journal and recording and mixing news pieces for National Public Radio.

Mitch then decided to focus on recording music full time and started a small studio on the edge of Chinatown in Manhattan called Tone Float Recording, which he operated for several years before merging with The Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn where he became the head engineer for several years. Always wanting to diversify his experience he then began working in post production at Vice Media, recording voiceovers and mixing shortform news/documentary content as well as trailers and sizzle reels.

After leaving Vice it became clear to Mitch that it was time to build a new studio where he could combine all of these diverse fields in which he was experienced in one home. And Deep Dive was born.

Mitch has not only been behind the board when it comes to music. He has played in an eclectic range of bands as well, including Dementia 13, Beautiful Skin, and Heavy Hands. He also DJ’ed soul, funk, garage rock and punk at many club nights such as Shout, Smashed! Blocked!, Subway Soul and Black and White. Rest assured that Mitch not only understands the gear but music as well.
